With over 30 years of global experience, Basker Stargard Murugappan is a respected expert in energy transition. He currently serves as the Director of Energy Transition, CCS, Geothermal, and Hydrogen for the Energy, Mineral and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD), where he leads a multidisciplinary team. Throughout his career, he has worked for many of the world’s leading companies, including Shell, UNOCAL, BP, Petronas, and KNOC. He has extensive experience in production engineering and completions roles, having worked in over 30 countries across five continents.

For the past 15 years, he has focused on future technologies, applying his traditional oil and gas expertise to pioneer groundbreaking solutions. He is directly managing several key projects:
– The development of four large-scale CCS storage facilities in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
– The design and development of the first commercial hydrogen storage facility in the continental U.S.
– Pioneering the construction of the first closed-loop geothermal wells in California, a pilot project in partnership with the DOE and SHASTA to provide energy for over 2,500 homes.

A graduate with a Master’s in Petroleum Engineering from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, he is an experienced speaker, having contributed to over 30 workshops and conferences for the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) across Asia and Africa. His deep technical knowledge and pioneering role in modern energy projects make him a compelling and authoritative keynote speaker.
