Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tham Hoang

Dr. Tham Hoang is an Associate Professor at Auburn University, USA, with over 15 years of experience in environmental science and toxicology. His research focuses on the impact and risk of pollutants (metals, synthetic chemicals, and notably microplastics) to the natural environment and aquatic ecosystems. His publications in high impact factor journals have earned him recognition, leading to invitations to speak at international conferences across North America, Europe, and Asia.

He is an active, longtime member of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), where he served as President of the Midwest Regional SETAC. Currently, he is a senior editor for the peer-reviewed SETAC journal, Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management, and an associate editor for two other journals.

Dr. Hoang is dedicated to enhancing environmental research and education in his home country, Vietnam. Over the past 15 years, he has organized and chaired a series of four International Conferences on Environmental Pollution, Restoration, and Management and numerous workshops in Vietnam. These events have attracted scientists from over 30 countries and fostered international collaborations. The most recent 2024 conference in Quy Nhon received strong support from the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment and the Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam.

Tiến sĩ Thẩm Hoàng là Phó Giáo sư tại Đại học Auburn, Hoa Kỳ, với hơn 15 năm kinh nghiệm nghiên cứu và giảng dạy về khoa học môi trường và độc chất học. Nghiên cứu của ông tập trung vào tác động và rủi ro của các chất gây ô nhiễm như kim loại, hóa chất tổng hợp, và gần đây là vi nhựa đối với môi trường tự nhiên và hệ sinh thái dưới nước.

Trong 15 năm qua, ông đã tổ chức và chủ trì một chuỗi bốn Hội nghị Quốc tế về Ô nhiễm, Phục hồi, và Quản lý Môi trường tại Việt Nam, thu hút các nhà khoa học từ hơn 30 quốc gia và thúc đẩy hợp tác nghiên cứu. Hội nghị gần đây nhất (2024) được sự ủng hộ của Bộ trưởng Bộ Tài nguyên và Môi trường và Phó Thủ tướng Việt Nam. Mục tiêu của ông là sử dụng nghiên cứu độc chất học môi trường để bảo vệ hệ sinh thái và duy trì môi trường sống khỏe mạnh cho nhân loại.

Son V. Nghiem Biography

Dr. Son V. Nghiem is currently serving as a Senior Research Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). He is also a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). His solid career foundation was established at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he received his Ph.D. in 1991. His thesis focused on developing complex electromagnetic wave models for applications in the polarimetric remote sensing of geophysical media.

At JPL, Dr. Nghiem holds several key roles, affirming his leading position in Earth science and satellite technology. He is the Science and Applications Development Lead of the Radar Science and Engineering Section and the Discipline Program Manager of the Water and Energy Cycle Science Office.

His research is highly diverse, encompassing active and passive remote sensing, the design of advanced satellite radar and radiometer systems, and in-depth studies of electromagnetic scattering theories. His Earth science applications span widely, from the tropics to the polar regions. Dr. Nghiem’s academic contributions are immense, including authoring or co-authoring more than 130 peer-reviewed articles and over 500 conference articles. He has been honored with numerous prestigious awards from NASA, including three Exceptional Achievement Medals (in 2006, 2008, and 2010), along with the 2023 Voyager Award for his international leadership role in advancing remote sensing for high-societal-impact applications.

With over 30 years of global experience, Basker Stargard Murugappan is a respected expert in energy transition. He currently serves as the Director of Energy Transition, CCS, Geothermal, and Hydrogen for the Energy, Mineral and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD), where he leads a multidisciplinary team. Throughout his career, he has worked for many of the world’s leading companies, including Shell, UNOCAL, BP, Petronas, and KNOC. He has extensive experience in production engineering and completions roles, having worked in over 30 countries across five continents.

For the past 15 years, he has focused on future technologies, applying his traditional oil and gas expertise to pioneer groundbreaking solutions. He is directly managing several key projects:

– The development of four large-scale CCS storage facilities in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

– The design and development of the first commercial hydrogen storage facility in the continental U.S.

– Pioneering the construction of the first closed-loop geothermal wells in California, a pilot project in partnership with the DOE and SHASTA to provide energy for over 2,500 homes.

A graduate with a Master’s in Petroleum Engineering from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, he is an experienced speaker, having contributed to over 30 workshops and conferences for the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) across Asia and Africa.
